Gale alerts authorities to sexual exploitation by gangs

GangsDerby City Council and the police ignored information on the sexual exploitation of young girls by gangs in Derby. David Gale, a Derby Community Action Team leader, claims that police and council services were alerted to the sexual exploitation of female gang members but no action was taken.

Gale, recently a Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner candidate, says he raised the issue of the sexual exploitation of female gang members with both the police and the city council’s neighbourhood teams but was met with a blanket denial that any problem existed. After being promised follow up action, no contact has been made.

Gale said, “Our Community Action Team has witnessed gangs roaming the streets of Derby offering the girls amongst them for the purposes of prostitution.”

“I last raised the issue face to face with the police on 5th October 2012 and again two weeks later with the city council at the Community Safety Partners’ Risk Strategy briefing. I highlighted the issue again via Twitter on 17th November.”

“At the time, I received a blanket denial that there was a problem, the teams involved claiming to have had no visibility of the issue. Despite leaving my contact details, I’ve heard nothing since.”

“My experience in community partnership policing has taught me that you need a proper beat bobby to act as the eyes and ears of a community and to provide the glue that stops vulnerable people dropping through the gaps in processes. In this case, the complete lack of awareness seems to prove the point.”

On 21st November, the Children’s Commissioner, published an interim report which matches the information provided by Gale. The Deputy Children’s Commissioner, Sue Berelowitz, said the evidence on child exploitation in gangs indicated that the perpetrators “come from all ethnic groups and so do their victims, contrary to what some may wish to believe”. Ms Berelowitz added, “The failure of agencies to recognise this means that too many child victims are not getting the protection and support they so desperately need.”

David Gale said, “It’s time to take the gloves off and demand that our council and police deal with reality, not an academic tick-box process that puts them in denial of the serious risk to children posed by gangs.”
