Shaun Wright’s case is symptomatic of a wider issue

Shaun WrightThe resignation of Shaun Wright as Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire may feel like a vindication of those who have called for his head but his case is symptomatic of a wider malaise that impacts not just children’s care but public services in general.

Few elected councillors have experience as council officers and even fewer have the required expertise to hold officers properly to account. Similarly, at national level, it’s rare for an MP to have the deep understanding of a civil service department that can detect ‘Yes, Minister’ responses in circumstances where the wagons are already circled. Pressures with budgets and targets only exacerbate the chronic lack of scrutiny and governance being delivered in public services. The desire by elected officials to maintain the confidence of the electorate encourages them to conceal their lack of competence and the true extent of the lack of accountability of public services. Ladies and Gentlemen, government is a smoke and mirrors operation on a grand scale.

Wright claims to have been kept in the dark for over a decade about the true extent of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. If that truly is the case, then whoever kept him in the dark is guilty of misconduct in public office, a serious criminal offence with a tariff of up to life imprisonment.

Someone should go to jail.
